Massage Spotlight: Deep Tissue

In honor of National Massage Therapy Awareness Week, we’re highlighting some of our favorite massage styles to help you discover the best massage for your needs. Our second massage feature of the week is Deep Tissue, which is designed to provide relief for chronic tension in muscles due to stress. Deep Tissue massage realigns the deeper layers of the muscle and connective tissue, which provides stress and pain relief, and revives overall energy and alertness.

We asked our St. Pete and Tampa Deep Tissue specialists, Joe and Kristen, a few questions to help breakdown Deep Tissue massage therapy and get you ready for your next visit

What do you love most about Deep Tissue as a form of massage therapy?

Joe:

I love that Deep Tissue massage not only treats muscle aches and pains but is also a form of stress relief.

Kristen:

I love that Deep Tissue massage helps me feel refreshed and that my muscles had a great workout.

For me, the main goal for Deep Tissue is to focus and work out areas of pain and tension. It’s great for treating chronic aches and pains.
— Joe

What are the physical benefits of Deep Tissue as a massage specialty?

Joe:

Deep Tissue is great for lowering blood pressure and heart rate and great for rehabilitation for injured muscles.

Kristen:

Deep Tissue will work out knots from overworked and stressed muscles and connective tissue to alleviate immediate pain as well as chronic joint and muscle pain. Also, it promotes faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.

What should guests expect from their massage?

Joe:

Deep Tissue massage is just how its name sounds: deep. Deep Tissue is used to target deeper areas of a muscle, which could possibly cause some discomfort. Staying vocal with your therapist on what is good or too much helps us help you.

Kristen:

You can have tenderness for 12-24 hours like a good workout, but then you should feel great after that.

What would you say to someone who has never gotten a massage?

Joe:

As an LMT, I believe it’s important to start building a client’s trust during the consultation, especially for first-timers. I will let them know that I will always be massaging at their comfort level and they will be properly draped at all times. The client being comfortable from beginning to end is a top priority.

Kristen:

Remember to breathe. A lot of people hold their breath when it is tender but you need to breathe to get oxygen to help release the tension in muscles.

Deep Tissue is a good option if you have chronic muscle problems, such as soreness, injury, or imbalance. I love when guests come in and leave feeling relief.
— Kristen

How has massage therapy changed your life?

Joe:

Massage therapy helps me deal with old injury pains and takes my mind off of everyday stress.

Kristen:

The industry promotes wellness and celebrates self-care for me as well as for my guests.
