Massage Therapy For Military Service Members
Military service is one of the most physically and mentally demanding careers an American can have. Whether serving deployments overseas or working on-base at home, military servicemen and women from all branches and ranks work hard while serving our country, and deserve an opportunity for self-care. At Massage Studio, we’re thankful for all that our military does for us, and are proud to share our self-care massage therapy with those who deserve it most!
PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF MASSAGE
Much like athletes, active duty military service members have to bring their peak physical performance to work. Receiving a massage offers a multitude of physical benefits, enhancing your overall sense of well-being. Massage can help stretch muscles, increase flexibility, and improve posture so that they can stay in shape and bring their best to the physical aspects of their job. When using sports massage, your massage therapist will focus not only on helping your muscles recover, but also preparing them for strenuous use to avoid aches and stiffness before they happen.
For veterans, transitioning back to civilian life can be a challenge, especially after injuries, aches, and pains sustained in action. Massage can help break down adhesions and scar tissue caused by injuries, wounds, and physical exertion to reduce recovery time from these types of strains. Massage also improves lymphatic circulation, which helps flush out toxins that might have been encountered and built up while serving overseas, working onboard a ship, or otherwise being exposed to chemicals, fumes, and toxins while serving.
MENTAL BENEFITS OF MASSAGE
It’s no secret that serving in the military can take a heavy mental toll, especially after a deployment overseas. While most people are aware of the prevalence of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among both active duty military and veterans, few people are aware just how prevalent mental health conditions can be. According to a study conducted by JAMA Psychiatry, 1 in 4 active duty members showed signs of a mental health condition, and the rates of depression are five times higher in active duty military and veterans than in civilians.
Massage therapy has been repeatedly shown to help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions by decreasing heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels while encouraging the production of key neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. These neurotransmitters are responsible for mood regulation, relaxation, feelings of trust, and overall happiness and stability. The combined benefits of massage and mental health support are especially valuable when transitioning back to life on the home front, making massage therapy an extremely helpful tool to reduce or avoid those mental health conditions that are all-too-common among our service members.
MASSAGE FOR MILITARY FAMILIES
Military spouses and children also encounter unique stressors alongside their active duty and veteran loved ones. Whether a loved one is deployed and out of reach, or has just made it home and is in the process of transitioning back to domestic life, it’s important for military families to take care of themselves while also caring for and supporting their loved one. Regular wellness massage therapy helps promote physical relaxation, mindfulness, and stress relief. Taking those 60-90 minutes for self care can help military family members bring their best selves to life, making them an even stronger support
network for their loved one.
